RV Furnace Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide for Cold Nights

It was 34 degrees outside, we were camped in the Smoky Mountains, and our furnace decided that was the perfect time to stop working. The blower fan would run, but no heat came out. Just cold air and growing desperation. That night, bundled in every blanket we owned, I promised myself I would learn how to troubleshoot the furnace before our next cold-weather trip.
The good news is that most RV furnace problems are caused by a handful of common issues, and many of them are fixable without a technician. Here is what to check before you panic.
How an RV Furnace Works (Quick Overview)
Most RV furnaces are forced-air propane systems. When you set the thermostat above the current temperature, the control board signals the blower motor, which starts pushing air. After a short delay, the propane valve opens, the igniter sparks, and the burner lights. Air flows over the heat exchanger and into the RV through ducts. An exhaust vent on the outside of the RV expels combustion gases.
If any step in this sequence fails, the furnace either does not start, blows cold air, or shuts down after a few seconds.

This sounds obvious, but check your propane tank level. If you have been running the stove, water heater, and furnace, the tank might be lower than you think. Also verify the propane valve on the tank is fully open. A partially open valve can supply enough gas for the stove but not enough for the furnace.
2. Battery Voltage
RV furnaces need 12-volt power to run the blower and control board. If your battery voltage drops below 10.5 volts, the furnace may not ignite at all. Check your battery monitor. If the voltage is low, connect to shore power or start your generator before trying the furnace again.
3. Thermostat Setting
Make sure the thermostat is set to heat mode (not off or cool) and that the target temperature is at least 3 to 5 degrees above the current reading. Some digital thermostats have a delay before activating the furnace.
4. Air Flow Blockages
Check that nothing is blocking the furnace intake or exhaust vents on the outside of the RV. Mud dauber wasps, spider webs, leaves, and road debris commonly block these vents, especially if the RV has been stored. A blocked exhaust vent causes the furnace to shut down as a safety precaution.
Intermediate Troubleshooting
5. Sail Switch
The sail switch is a small sensor inside the furnace that confirms the blower fan is moving air before allowing ignition. If the sail switch is stuck or broken, the furnace blower runs but the burner never lights. You can sometimes hear the blower running with no click of ignition. A stuck sail switch can sometimes be freed by gently cleaning it, but replacement is usually a $20 to $40 fix.
6. Igniter and Flame Sensor
If you hear the blower start, followed by a clicking sound (the igniter attempting to spark) and then the furnace shuts down after 30 seconds, the igniter may be failing or the flame sensor is not detecting a flame. Soot buildup on the igniter or sensor is common and can sometimes be cleaned with fine sandpaper. Replacement parts are inexpensive but require accessing the furnace compartment.
7. Control Board
If nothing happens when you turn on the thermostat, no blower, no clicking, nothing, the control board may have failed. Check the fuse on the furnace circuit first (often a 15-amp automotive fuse near the furnace or in the main fuse panel). A blown fuse is a two-minute fix. A dead control board means calling a technician.
Staying Warm While You Fix It
When the furnace is not cooperating and it is cold, you need backup heat:
- Electric space heater: Only if you have shore power or a generator. Use a heater with an auto-shutoff tip sensor for safety.
- Catalytic propane heater: Brands like Mr. Buddy produce indoor-safe propane heaters that work without electricity. Keep a window cracked for ventilation and use with a CO detector.
- Layers and sleeping bags: A quality cold-weather sleeping bag rated to 20 degrees keeps you warm even without any heat source.
- Hot water bottles: Fill a Nalgene bottle with hot water and put it in your sleeping bag. Old-school but effective.
